Statement

I work instinctively to interpret a landscape and create an image that is a balance between abstract and representation. Inspired by contrasting shapes and colours, the composition evolves with a series of re-drawing that leads to layers of overlapping. Loose linear trails define the landscape and these gestural marks then become part of the piece.

The starting point can be irrelevant. What is important is the viewer’s interpretation; each time you look at the work you see something new. You notice the sensitive line work or find beauty within the layering of the colour palette. As an image becomes more abstract it frees you from visual assumptions, so you can become aware of the application of the paint, not as representation, but as process.
