Working within the concepts of objecthood and object as celebrity, whilst exploring the identity, materiality and creation of a new narrative for an object. Referencing observation, surveillance, ‘through the keyhole’ and the ‘peeping tom’.

'If the reflective can be described as a medium, it is one in which the viewer becomes the author, because without the viewer it is impossible to discern the something, or even the nothing, that is there' (Josiah McElheny)

Introduction

Juliet is a story-teller and likes to represent the hidden or overlooked in unexpected ways. Perception and alternative ways of seeing are exploited by her in order to create work that interweaves social histories and collective memories with her own personal, gendered archive.

Statement

Juliet is a story-teller and likes to represent the hidden or overlooked in unexpected ways. Perception and alternative ways of seeing are exploited by her in order to create work that interweaves social histories and collective memories with her own personal, gendered archive.

Juliet’s current work utilises elements of the everyday to create collages that combine nostalgic references to our shared histories and evoke memories of the familiarity of home. Her work is created by layering mono-prints on tissue paper from diverse objects including vintage pressed glass, wooden butter pats and packaging materials. Everyday domestic elements such as textured wallpapers, dressmaking patterns and instruction sheets, vintage book pages and postage stamps are overlaid to create further patterns and layers which reference our social interactions and the hidden tensions and emotions that underpin every family.

Juliet has a Masters in Contemporary Art from Plymouth University and her work has been shown in London and across the South West. She is a Retail and Visitor Assistant at Tate St Ives, an Associate member of Penwith Gallery, a member of St Ives Arts Club and works from her studio in the heart of the town. eating the presence
