Statement

As an artist, Richard Westlake is always trying to make sense of himself and the sourrounding enironment. He interprets light, smell and warmth to express events and emotions on canvas whilst back in the studio.

Most of Richard's work are oil paintings, but he also enjoys the free form and abstract qualities of watercolours and acrylics. Sometimes he likes to mix the oils with encustic.

The art of Richard Westlake is often abstracted from something specific in the material world. Although this is often from striking visual scenes or from past memories. Often they include lanscapes and townscapes, although others might just be metaphors for the interprestation of creative life.

The choice of colour is very import in Richard Westlake's paintings. He likes to spread the colour over the canvas and allow it to evolve into shapes reducing it down into the pure imaginative forms.

Richard's paintings are about giving a sense of wonderment to the world, taking in the many occual views and presenting it in an alternative way that might create inspiration, happiness and other strong emotions.
