Ekta Kaul

A pared down aesthetic with a focus on simplicity, craftsmanship and timeless style is at the heart of my work. A deep interest in exploring personal histories through maps, a love of bold colour & simple graphic patterns drive the work forward. My practice has two strands, namely, embroidered cartographic quilts and small editions of fashion accessories in luxurious fabrics like silk, fine wool and cashmere.

I draw inspiration from urban textures, aerial photography and maps. I enjoy using colour in a bold manner, whether contrasting monotones of ivory and black or playing with saturated hues. I collect colours from nature, art and architecture. Often a flower, birds’ plumage or a detail in a building inspires new colour explorations.

I trained in Fashion at India’s premier design school, the National Institute of Design and in Textiles at the Heriot Watt University, Scotland earning a Masters degree supported by a British Council scholarship. I established my practice in 2008 after winning the Craft Council’s prestigious business set-up award, Next Move. Since then, I continue to exhibit at reputed national and international exhibitions and have won awards from organizations such as the Arts Council and the British Council
