Gallery Maya was started in 1994 by Carole Arumainayagam and Ivan Ferguson to promote Indian Contemporary Art in Hong Kong. They were excited by the calibre and wealth of well established artists that were not being represented overseas. They started collecting during trips and organised the first Indian Contemporary art exhibition in Hong Kong.
Since then, Gallery Maya has organised a number of successful mixed and one man shows for artists such as Paramjit Singh, Anjolie Ela Menon, Manjit Bawa, K M Adimoolam and Achutan Kudallur. They also organised the first Vietnamese contemporary art show in Singapore for Viet Dung. The main aim of the gallery is to have a limited number of well curated shows that will raise the profile of contemporary art from Asia with the international community.
Interest in Indian Contemporary Art outside India has grown significantly since the gallery was first conceived. Christies held their first auction of Indian Art in New York in 1996 and since then there has been a flurry of activity in auctions and shows in Hong Kong, London, New York and Berlin.
Gallery Maya has a strong relationship with the artists it represents. The gallery‘s main aim is to ensure that collectors of art have access to the best art from these artists and that the artists gain the profile that they deserve. We aim to guide both collectors and artists in an exciting emerging market that is moving main stream
