Statement

An established decorative mixed media maker, her practise has tended to produce playful component pieces combined with found materials. Assemblages inspired by creatures, birds and plants.

Recently her work has become more abstract and larger in scale and concentrates more on form as a whole. Shirley creates wall hung and freestanding sculptures  Texture is embossed into the surface of leather dry slab rolled clay used tools or plant material gathered from her large garden often making her own slips to give a background base of colour. After hand building a components or main bodies of sculptures, the work is bisque fired. Then under glazes and oxides are applied and rubbed away to give layers of colour. Fired again at a higher firing temperature. Components are then assembled together with found materials, wire, vintage maps to create a narrative giving the components a harmonistic relationship with the reclaimed materials. The work developments reflect the importance to Shirley how materials and shape relate and effect each other with placement and space.

She supplies contemporary galleries nationally, and has been selected to show her work at fairs including Earth & Fire, Art&York, The Contemporary Craft Festival, The Great Northern Craft Contemporary Craft Fair.
