Introduction

Statement

Paintings

These paintings are reflections of my visual interests. In the country I notice the fleeting changes in colour of the landscape. In town I am drawn to the rhythms of architecture and details of texture and decay on walls.

The Landscapes series are the glimpses of the changing colours of the Worcestershire countryside seen from the window of my car; the same fields over and over, never the same, always different as the light and the seasons change. I am interested in the juxtaposition of colours and textures, whether harmonious and subtle or harsh and surprising.

The Abstract Colours series are also developing my interest in texture and colour but in a more formal way, allowing me a playful exploration of mark making, and tonal balancing.

I am currently working on a small scale, most of the work shown here is approximately a foot square. I like this size, it is intimate, captures a glimpse out of a window perfectly, and does not demand too much commitment from the owner in terms of wall space real estate.

"My paintings would rather give you a quiet burst of pleasure each time you walk past than shout loudly from the centre of the room."

Public Art

During 2010-2011 I have been working on several exciting large scale public art commissions, including window panels for the Marie Curie hospice in Glasgow and artwork design and mosaics for the King's Heath village square development in Birmingham. (galleries of images to be posted soon!)

Biography

I originally trained as a Ceramicist (Farnham ‘86–’89)

I have spent the past fifteen years teaching as a community artist, a visiting artist in schools and, on a more formal structured basis within the National Curriculum framework.

Working as a freelance artist in schools led me to become more and more involved in working with marginalised groups, especially young people at risk of exclusion and those with emotional social and behavioural difficulties.

After spending three years teaching KS 3&4 ESBD students full time, I decided to re-establish my own studio practice as an artist, to balance my work with schools.

I have been working on several large scale commissions recently, including translucent window panels for a Hospice in Glasgow and mosaic designs for a vilage square labyrinth in Kings Heath Birmingham.
