Jo Beer
I am a figurative painter based in Cornwall.
Following a series of contemporary florals, my work is now predominantly figurative.People are so diverse...there's no such thing as an ordinary person...eveyone is extraordinary in some way. Be it their style, their attitudes, their character, their features, everybody has an attribute that for whatever reason makes them stand out from the next person.
I like to illustrate some of that detail, sometimes conventionally, sometimes unconventionally with a more abstract view.
Always in oil paint, I like the silky fluidity, the aromas of the process, the beautiful tones that suit my work.
Since studying under Vincent Wilson ( Newlyn Art Movement) I am self developed.I have exhibited in Southwest UK, Southeast as well as internationally within online exhibitions and am represented by Saatchiart, Artfinder, Zatista and Kaya Gallery ( Plymouth).
I have twice featured in Sky Art's Portrait Artist of the Year, with my painting from the first series ( Not Pretty But Pretty Honest) being chosen as one of the images used over and over in the installation piece of a huge Mona Lisa on Clapham Common, London, which remained in situ for some months. For the current series (2016 but aired 2017) I had to paint actress Parminder Nagra. Parminder chose my portrait to take back to Los Angeles with her.
I am currently working on a series of portraits for a solo exhibition. 'On The Face Of It' will be a collection of anonymous portraits, the title refers to the way that we pass judgement on something at first glance, and that our opinion can change if we take the time to look a little closer.
On The Face Of It can be seen from early Oct 2019, TRP Gallery, Plymouth, Devon. UK
Painting is a joy, I cannot think of a better way to spend solitary time.Thank you for taking the time to have a look.
I am very happy to undertake commissions.

I began as a self taught experimental film maker, influenced by the home movies of Derek Jarman and Elliott Bristow. My early photographic work was influenced by a variety of people including Andre Kertesz, Duane Michals, Diane Arbus, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Helmut Newton. I studied Design and Photography at Falmouth School of Art & Design in the early 90s, and then PhotoMedia at Plymouth College of Art. I have worked in art and media education and now, in my fifties, I find myself returning to more experimental pieces drawing on a wealth of influences.
I hope you enjoy my work.
