At Bay

This painting is from the series Bye bye baby about the loss and opportunity of grown children leaving home. In this series I explore apertures metaphorically as voids resulting from loss and openings to future possibilities for both children and parent.

Introduction

Statement

I trained as a Fine Artist and after graduating with a First Class Honours Degree, I went on to Chelsea College of Art to study Set Design for Television. My credits for stage, studio and location for BBC, Chanel 4 and ITV span 27 years and have included Designing Sets for : Shirley Bassey, Lesley Garrett, Vic and Bob, Kylie, Bob Monkhouse, Robbie Williams, David Bowie, Cher, Amy Winehouse and Julie Walters on shows as diverse as The Brit Awards, The Royal Variety Performance, Shooting Stars, Goodness Gracious Me, The original Design of Eastenders and The World Cup.

In 2003 I returned to my first love Painting, which I feel compelled to produce as an emotional response to all that life deals us, autobiographical and personal but relating to common human experience both good and bad. I grew up in Devon where rolling hills , wild moors and dramatic seascapes played a large and influential part in my childhood. Not surprisingly this landscape is still very important to me, but for the past 30 years I have lived and worked in London, a much loved urban existence and so both places seep into my Painting. I want my work to convey a bold atmosphere and mood which stems from the many years of doing just that in my Set Design work for Television.

In 2011 whilst traveling in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, I Photographed several series of transient forms and marks on walls and surfaces which suggest unique atmospheric worlds, each with their own pictorial resonance or echo. Many are redolent of things half remembered, some resemble fragments of old charts and maps, while others feature overt elements of graphic representation.

Both my Painting and Photography display a continuing need to explore the fine line between pure abstraction and figurative recognition, between chance and control, discovering and cajoling the work through the different media, employing colour, surface and texture.
