Introduction

Statement

I've been a professional potter and an art teacher for most of my working life. Now I paint  full time making work that I've been considering for many years but have never seriously pursued.  The determination to realise some of these ideas arose as a result of returning to study on an IMP Programme at Exeter College of Art . The painter John Danvers directed a small group of students in  studies and discussion of the evolution of  modernism and post modernism. I found it very interesting and, despite my craft background, discovered a new found commitment to making my own work. I was previously a little stranded in the English landscape tradition whether it be expressionistic or impressionistic, the representational aspect posed huge limitations on ideas I was begining to formulate. Seeing and discussing the work of Agnes Martin and Sean Scully in particular but also Bridget Riley, Jason Martin, Fiona Rae and a host of newly discovered artists was a huge inspiration, at just the right time, and has contributed significantly to my current practise. As a potter I enjoyed the process of making simple, functional forms, mostly free of decoration. As a painter I also enjoy  process, believing it to be a significant factor of the work. I tear paper because the hand process of tearing energises the image and contributes to my idea of a painting as an object rather than a depiction.  Although appearing to be quite formal, pre concieved compositions I actually work very spontaneously and intuitively, the end result is invariably a surprise.

I consider myself fortunate in finding a studio in a wonderful environment close to the South Devon coast at Bantham and I work in close proximity to painter Graham Fish and sculptor Steve Baddeley  who have studios on the same farm. We welcome visitors but prior appointments are adviseable as we do not always adhere to normal 'office hours'.

I am currently interested in establishing a relationship with either gallery or agent able to offer both commercial and creative input. Please do not hesitate to make contact if the work is of interest.
