Introduction

Statement

David Greenaway - installations and sculptural works -’Way Seeking Mind’.

Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki said:
“Life is like climbing into a boat,
sailing out into an ocean
and sinking.”

This inspires me.

My work aims to foster a sustainable practise where the everyday of the so-called rational mind is not imposed upon the work, rather the work comes into being in and of itself and the rest follows. To facilitate this I focus upon the two physical activities involved in the creation of the pieces, namely the gathering and the assembling.

Most often I find myself gathering a particular element for I know not what. I enjoy this. Not knowing.

After an open-ended length of time the assembly begins and once again I focus upon the activity allowing the individual aesthetics to take care of themselves. In this way the work seems to arise spontaneously. I am only the facilitator. Concepts come and go, yet a thread develops: the way is inviting the inquiring minds of artist and witness alike. Each piece reminds me of a performance: unique to the time and place, complete and simultaneously requesting the next step. This is my sustainable practise.
