Mary Stephens’ work is derived from observations made in the surrounding landscape of the South East of England and she produces paintings, prints and photographs inspired by her meanderings through nature. The landscape is seen as a metaphor for human experience and the various nuances discovered therein are the subject of Mary’s work. Recent explorations include walking the South Downs Way and Mary is at present developing a series of photographs, linocuts and screen prints in response to this experience. Her previous work has included large monochrome paintings, rendered in ink on canvas, depicting woodlands. These works were informed by many hours spent by the artist in Stansted Park in West Sussex. Mary has a studio at Art Space and also teaches printmaking.
