Statement

Taking inspiration from the northern landscape, I try to break down the form and visual representation of the view to an almost abstract level. At this point I can start working on the non-visual elements that give us a sense of place. Atmosphere, temperature, wind and movement of tide. The goal is to create an image to be felt rather than viewed.

After taking some time away from painting, Nick Coupland now returns with his vivid and emotional representations of riverbank and coastline. Expect further work through 2011.

Biography

Originally destined towards a future in graphic design, Nick Coupland decided to begin painting seriously in 2004, developing his style and technique of abstract landscapes due to Graphics increasing bias towards the digital age. Based in East Yorkshire, he uses the local landscape and northern coastline to inspire and create his images. Having always painted from an early age, Nick studied Graphic design at Hull college, then later at York college, however, his explorations into fine art are completely self taught.

Nick Coupland currently lives and works in the Yorkshire village of Welton.
