An ongoing theme within the work is the complex relationship between culture and nature. This is expressed on a formal level by contrasting hard-edged areas of flat colour with free-flowing paint as a metaphor for management and autonomy. The surfaces of the paintings are built up using a range of oil mediums to achieve different opacities and textures; from the rapid drying solidity of wax to washes of stained turpentine.
