I work from sketchbook studies. The paintings are reworked and layered until they achieve a formal resolution that seems to me to convey an essence of my experience of the subject.

My paintings are skilled and considered. I do not however want them to appear to take themselves too seriously. I strive for what William Scott described as “the beauty of the thing done badly”.

My work is like a strange feudal kingdom, with chests of jewels, dark patches of earth and fierce gates all competing for space in a small glade. My drawings are more lyrical, bringing air and space to the pot. I only ever partially understand what's going on with them, but at their best I am intoxicated and nourished; they become talismatic.
